Why is high quality general lighting so important?

The Issue – Many commercial lighitng products in the lower price / performance range, including many new LED fixtures, produce poor quality light. Their Color Rendering Index’s (CRI – one measure of performance) are often well below 90. Viewed simultaneously with other light sources of higher quality, they appear visually “harsh”, and often have Illumination inconsistency, flicker and other artifacts.

Such poor quality lighting negatively impacts productivity when employees move back and forth between color critical viewing lights and whatever surrounding lighting exists. For example, a designer moving between a viewing station and a planogram area; a press operator moving between the press console and the printing machinery; etc. Their eyes must continuously readjust between the two lighting conditions. Eye strain is considerable and color judgement is compromised.
